What does the Residential Service Repair HVAC Technician do on a daily basis?

  • The workday normally starts at 8:00 AM or whenever access to the customer’s facility is available.  The tech goes on the clock when he arrives at his first call.
  • The tech may be dispatched by calling the dispatcher from home to get his first call.
  • If not dispatched from home, the tech may stand by for a call or drive to the office.
  • The best companies will hold a one hour meeting or training each week, usually in the morning.
  • Service repair techs perform after hour’s emergency service calls and are required to drive a company van or truck home.  Techs take turns usually “on call” for a week at a time.
  • Many companies will keep the techs time, requiring the tech to check-in by phone when he arrives, and departs the customer’s location.  The cell phone or radio is usually furnished by the company.
  • The tech will interface with the customer and find out what the customers complaint is.  Most residential companies use a flat rate pricing system and will charge a diagnostics charge to analyze and determine the problem.  Analysis should not take more than about 30 minutes.
  • If the unit is not running the tech will follow a logical sequence to track down the problem.  He will check the power source, control power and each safety component that could keep the system from operating.
  • When the problem is found the tech will look up the flat rate repair charge and present this to the customer.  He will also be expected to sell additional maintenance programs, upgrades and accessories and possibly schedule an appointment for a salesperson or make a sales presentation for a replacement AC system.
  • A significant amount of the techs income may be generated by sales commissions.
  • The tech will make the authorized repairs and then prepare an invoice or work order describing the work performed, parts used and charges.  The tech will collect payment in the form of check, cash or credit card.
  • The tech may make a trip to the office or supply house to replenish parts at least once per week.
