You need a license to do mechanical contracting work in Oklahoma. You have to pass examinations to get every mechanical license. In order to qualify for a contractor’s examination, you must have four years of work experience.

For any contractor license you have to complete a business examination and a rules examination. The business examination has mathematics questions on earnings, overhead plus discounts that you use to operate a business. It also includes questions on property lien laws, workers’ compensation insurance, taxes, as well as unemployment compensation insurance.

Once you have taken and passed the exam, to be able to acquire an active contractor’s license, you need to provide proof of workers’ compensation insurance, a five thousand dollar license bond, as well as fifty thousand dollars in liability insurance. If you choose to not pay these, you will be given an inactive license. The inactive license serves as a journeyman’s license.

Mechanical contractor’s license fees:

The mechanical contractor’s examination as well as license fees $225. The license is good for one year although all licenses run out on June 30 each year.

Requirements
• Applicants for a journeyman license must be at least eighteen years of age.
• Must have either four years of verifiable experience in the mechanical industry in the class for which the person is making an application.  Or have an associates degree/technical degree from an institution, approved by the Committee, that displays knowledge of the trade in the category of license applied for and two years of verifiable experience in a mechanical industry.
• Each active contractor should provide a five thousand dollar surety bond.
• Workers compensation and Fifty thousand dollar liability insurance are also required.
• To become a licensed contractor, the business and law examination must also be passed.

Exam
• The exam consists of ninety questions with a time limit of four hours. A score of 75% is needed to pass.
• The examination fee is $88. If you are sitting for the trade exam and the business law exam in the same session, the charge for both parts combined is $88.

  1. Hi David. You may remember me. I was a student of yours back about 1996 at Lexington. I have always wondered how to get hold of you and how you are these days. I’m fine, started my own business about a year ago. Of course it could always be better, but doing great. If interested you can reach me at 405-882-8625. My best to you. R.C.
